1954 GOJIRA (GODZILLA) *****

The first and best of the Godzilla movies, very serious in nature. Shows a lot of killing, including children laying next to their dead mothers. A protest to the atomic bombing in Japan 9 years earlier. Nuclear testings awaken a prehistoric dinosaur, who then goes on a rampage burning Tokyo down to the ground with his atomic breath. A scientist reluctantly uses his oxygen destroyer invention to kill Godzilla as he gives his life to protect its secret. Gojira is best viewed by watching the original Japanese subtitled verison, not the Americanized Perry Mason version which cuts 40 minutes. It is best to watch every Godzilla movie this way. A very important movie from a historical standpoint.

1955 GODZILLA RAIDS AGAIN **

Surprised at the success of the first movie, a sequel was rapidly made and it shows. Even the production staff complained they did not have proper time to work on Godzilla Raids Again. A problem which Toho apparently has never learned from. Anyways, another Godzilla appears and battles another monster for the first time (Angilas, who later tag teams with the Big G). After easily killing it, the Japanese military trap this Godzilla under an avalanche of ice. This one is again a serious movie with pretty good special effects for 1955 but they sped the film up for the fights scenes, and as I mentioned, it was thrown together too fast. It was kind of forgotten mainly because it came out 5 months after the release of Gojira and people were still talking about that one. It was known as Gigantis: The Fire Monster in America because of copyright problems. Though not very good at all, it remains the 3rd highest grossing Godzilla movie in Japan, behind King Kong vs Godzilla and 1954's Gojira.

1962 KING KONG vs GODZILLA **1/2

After being trapped in ice for 7 years, Godzilla breaks free and begins trashing Japan. A giant ape is discovered on a remote island as the Japanese government believes the only way to stop Godzilla is to have these two monsters duke it out. It is a draw as they both fall into the ocean. However, Toho has said it was meant for Kong to look like the winner (which is totally ridiculous) as he is seen swimming away. I remember loving this movie as a kid, but watching it now, I can see it could have been so much better. The Godzilla series begins it's goofy side with cheap special effects and campy humor. This is the highest grossing Godzilla movie in Japan to this day, and first one in color. Also of note, the American version added American actors and again changed the movie by adding their own scenes and cutting others. Also Godzilla's roar is heard at the end of the Japanese version but not in the American. This movie features one of the best and most popular Godzilla suites. But Kong just looks stupid. Toho did try to remake this in the 90's, but for some reason could not get permission to use Kong. This definately needs to be remade. It would make tons of money.

1964 GODZILLA vs THE THING (MOTHRA) ****

Great Godzilla movie and the last one to depict Godzilla as a force of nature (for 20 years anyways). A giant egg washes on the shores of Japan as Godzilla rises out of the ground. Godzilla heads for the egg as Mothra comes to defend it. Godzilla kills Mothra as her eggs hatch. The two caterpillars then battle Godzilla, spinning a cocoon around him as he falls into the ocean. This movie features one of the best G suits. The ending is a little disappointing to me. How can two worms beat Godzilla? But this is the best Godzilla sequel until at least 1993's Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla 2. There is a great feel to it. The story moves along nicely, the characters are not annoying, and it's colorful.

1964 GHIDRAH: THE THREE HEADED MONSTER ***

A metorite crashes to the earth unleashing the evil King Ghidrah's fury. The only way the earth can be saved, is if Godzilla, Mothra, and Rodan unite to combine their powers. Includes some silly and funny dialouge between the three monsters including "Godzilla watch your language" scene, as Godzilla beings his journey towards earth's defender. Campy fun, an OK movie, but nothing special here. Childish antics between the monsters begin here with Ghidrah shooting Godzilla in the butt. The best thing about the movie was the debut of Godzilla most popular rival, the three headed monster King Ghidrah!

1965 GODZILLA vs MONSTER ZERO ***1/2

Enjoyable, light-hearted fun as Godzilla and Rodan are monster-napped by aliens on the newly discovered Planet X in order to free their world from King Ghidrah (Monster Zero). However, humans soon find out that they really wanted them off Earth so that they would have no one to stop them as they try to conquer it. Our human heroes, including Nick Adams (first American to lead a G movie) help the monsters escape as they whip King Ghidrah again to save the day. Nicely made. This is one I can watch over and over for some reason. Includes the infamous Godzilla victory dance!

1966 GODZILLA vs THE SEA MONSTER ***

Colorful campy movie with cheesy special effects, originally written for King Kong. A woman has been missing for years, as her brother and friends go to an island in the South Pacific to look for her. They find some terrorist groups holding many people as slaves, with a giant lobster looking creature keeping people from leaving. The group finds Godzilla sleeping in a cave and wake him up by attracting lightning to hit him. Godzilla destroys the camps, frees the slaves and kills the creature. Then in a touching scene, the humans warn our hero that the island will self destruct. Godzilla then jumps into the sea just in time. Includes some volleyball action betweem G and Ebirah and a cameo from Mothra.

1967 SON OF GODZILLA **

A egg hatches on an island and a baby Godzilla comes out. Godzilla adopts it and defends it from other monsters (a huge spider and a few praying mantis), while teaching it lessons in life. Nothing special. Its not bad, but it could have been a lot better. It has a horrible Godzilla suite and Minilla looks ridiculous (and makes annoying noises). Too childish.

1968 DESTROY ALL MONSTERS ****

Good movie with good special effects with all the major monsters involved. In 1999, Monsterland has been created and holds all of them on it. An alien race gains control of the island and sends all the monsters to different cities of the world to destroy it. The human characters find a way to disable the mind control, so the aliens unleash King Ghidorah which results in a epic battle with Godzilla leading the way. (This was originally planned as the last Godzilla movie, because at the time, fewer and fewer people were attending. Son of Godzilla had the lowest attendence of any Godzilla movie up to that point. This idea didnt last long, as it was agreed upon to make another by using stock footage to cut costs)

1969 GODZILLA'S REVENGE *

A young boy (there is one featured in the next few movies) dreams of being on Monster Island with Godzilla and son. Lots of stock footage used to save money. For kids only. Probably the worst Godzilla movie. Not worth even talking about. Skip it unless you are a diehard fan.

1971 GODZILLA vs THE SMOG MONSTER ***1/2

A weird looking and different Godzilla movie which is either loved or hated, I being one that really likes it. Godzilla first role as the good guy as he saves the earth from a monster created by toxic waste, smog, and pollution named Hedorah. The movie is a little darker than usual in that it shows some killing. Also, its the only movie in which Godzilla figures out he can fly! Features the theme song Save The Earth.

1972 GODZILLA vs GIGAN *1/2

Because of a very bad economy in Japan, they had little money for the next few Godzilla movies and it shows. To show how bad it was, there were 4,694 movie theaters operating in Japan in 1965. By 1975, there were only 2,530. The annual movie attendance dropped by half. People in Japan were watching more TV. Even Godzilla made appearances on Zone Fighter in 1973. So here, Godzilla tag teams with Angilas as they perform some weird karate/WWF wrestling moves on King Ghidrah and Gigan (a neat creation who has a saw down his chest!) Of course I cannot forget to mention the alien cockroaches (who use a Godzilla tower at an amusement park) also Godzilla speaks for the first time. Only for diehard Godzilla fans. Stock footage used and its poorly done. The human plot leading up to the battle might put you to sleep.

1973 GODZILLA vs MEGALON 1/2

Along with Godzilla's Revenge, the worst Godzilla movie. He teams with Ultraman wannabe Jet Jaguar to fight Gigan and Megalon (a huge Beetle with drills in his arms) unleashed by the people of Seatopia, who are tired of nuclear testing. Includes the Godzilla drop kick scene in which he thinks he is Bruce Lee. For kids and diehard Godzilla fans only. Cheaply made and poorly done using stock footage. Godzilla has a kid friendly suite and even shakes hands with his tag team partner. So many bad scenes, including one where Godzilla is afraid to walk through fire. And Godzilla doesnt even show up until the movie is almost over. It was clearly made for children. Avoid it unless it brings back some childhood memory for you.

1974 GODZILLA vs MECHAGODZILLA **1/2

A lot better than the previous two movies, the 20th anniversary pits Godzilla up against a robot of himself (great idea) created by aliens from the black hole in order to get rid of him to conquer the world (same old plot). Godzilla teams up with King Seesar to save the day as the big G turns into a magnet and rips the head of Mechagodzilla off. Better production and quality. No stock footage was used, and no annoying boy as a main character. Good not great.

1975 TERROR OF MECHAGODZILLA **1/2

With a minor success of Mechagodzilla, he was brought right back in the next movie. The aliens from the black hole reconstruct Mechagodzilla with the help of a deranged scientist, who controlls another monster called Titanosaurus. When the scientist daughter is killed, the aliens turn her into a cyborg and place the control of Mechagodzilla inside her. Godzilla appears and battles both monsters. Humans find a sound to disable Titanosaurus. The daughter then realizes what happened and sacrifices her life, rendering Mechagodzilla usless. Godzilla rips his head off again revelaing the brain, and this time picks him up and throws him head first into the ground, then takes care of Titanosaurus. The movie was/is the lowest grossing Godzilla movie ever in Japan and it was decided to give the big guy a rest.

1984 GODZILLA 1984 **1/2

With the Cold War at its height, and a huge campaign to bring back Godzilla, it was decided in 1984 to do just that. However, it was decided to have Godzilla get in touch with his roots, and the only way to do that was to create a new timeline, ignoring all other movies except the first. Here Godzilla returns after a 30 year absense. He is a force of nature, trashing Japan while looking for nuclear energy to feed on and fighting Super X, before falling into a volcano. The movie has its good points but its bad ones as well. Again, the original Japanese subtitled version is better than the American Raymond Burr. Also Godzilla's roar is changed to sound more powerful.

1989 GODZILLA vs BIOLANTE ***

Picks up right where Godzilla 1984 left off. Godzilla gets a great new design and the special effects are very well done. They took their time on it and did a good job. However, the movie is a little long and drags at times when the human characters are involved, kind of boring. Also the final battle is way too short. Be on the look out for a pissed off plant, created by Godzilla cells and the spirit of a dead girl.

1991 GODZILLA vs KING GHIDORAH ***1/2

Probably the most complex Godzilla film. Time travelers from the 23rd century come back to the present to try to erase Godzilla from history, in order to save Japan so they say. They go back to 1944 during WWII and remove the Godzillasaurus (the breed of dinosaur Godzilla was before the nuclear bomb hit him) from the area where he got hit. But they release three Dorat creatures there. As they come back to 1991, they discover the three Dormats were hit with that radiation and emerge together. Now with no Godzilla, they unleash King Ghidorah to destroy Japan. However, the Godzillasaurus from 1944 did get hit with an even bigger dose of radiation than before, creating a more powerful Godzilla. This Godzilla easily kills Ghidorah and begins his usual trashing of Japan. One woman who didnt know the others were really up to helps out by returning to the future and turns Ghidorah into Mecha-King Ghidorah. She returns to 1991 and the monster drops Godzilla into the sea, stopping his rampage for only a moment.

1992 GODZILLA vs MOTHRA **

An update from 1964, Godzilla again battles Mothra. The highest grossing Godzilla movie since 27 years and second biggest box office draw in Japan behind Jurrasic Park in 1993. The moth must be popular. It has the same ending as the previous film. Mothra's enemy turned friend Battra dumps Godzilla into the ocean (How many times are they going to end a G movie this way?????? Geeez!!!). Godzilla's roar is changed back to its classic sound. Nothing special, not one of my favorites as Godzilla seems to play second fiddle to Mothra. And those Cosmos twins can get annoying.

1993 GODZILLA vs MECHAGODZILLA II ****1/2

The best Godzilla film since the first. Godzilla is in most of the movie, doing his thing, and there is plenty of action and suspense. An egg is found as Godzilla and Rodan fight over parental rights as a baby Godzillasaurus hatches. Scientists find a weakness in the baby (a second brain) and assume Godzilla is the same. They use the baby the lure Godzilla into a trap with their creation Mechagodzilla. Mecha defeats Rodan and Godzilla, but Rodan sacrifices his life by giving Godzilla his energy, in order to help the baby. Godzilla adds Rodan's power to his (he gets a new red fiery breath) as he destroys Mecha. Godzilla and the baby head out to sea. Very well done!!

1994 GODZILLA vs SPACEGODZILLA *1/2

After making one of the best, leave it to Toho to make one of the worst. Some nice fighting scenes, but overall, this movie is just missing something. Its boring, poorly done, and the special effects are lazy. Godzilla cells are carried into space creating a monster similar to Godzilla called Sapcegodzilla. Another robot created by Japan called MOGERA helps out the G-Man against Spacegodzilla. Godzilla, while still destructive, is presented here as the good guy. Includes a cameo from fairy Mothra.

1995 GODZILLA vs DESTROYER ****

A good overall Godzilla movie, and a sad one as Godzilla dies. It could have been much better than it is. A creature is formed from the Oxygen Destroyer used to kill Godzilla in 1954. Meanwhile, an nuclear accident causes Godzilla and Godzilla Jr to mutate further. Godzilla glows a bright red and is beginning to melt down, which could cause a worldwide catastrophe. Destroyer fights Jr and kills him, infuriating Godzilla. Godzilla kills Destroyer as he begins to die. The leftover radiation then is absorbed by Jr, who is revived and becomes the new Godzilla. The thing that bothers me about the Heisei series (and this movie in particular) is that whenever two monsters touch, sparks always fly. And when they use their breath weapon, it sounds like a video game. I don't know why Toho does the things they do.

1999 GODZILLA 2000 **1/2

Godzilla was brought back probably because of the embarrasment of GINO. A great new Godzilla design and some good special effects cant help the plot and the poor human characters. The movie seems uneven. Good in some spots bad in others. I like it probably and will remember it fondly because of the US theatrical release. Its got a fun, campy feeling to it. Again ignoring the timeline, Godzilla fights a UFO and a alien monster called Orga, which looks a little like GINO when Godzilla fries him. This new G series ignores all previous flims and takes place as though only the first movie existed.

2000 GODZILLA vs MEGAGUIRUS ***

Slightly better than G2000, Godzilla does battle with a giant dragonfly as the humans try to suck him into a black hole. The special effects are better, though not perfect, and the human characters get better treatment. Its enjoyable but nothing to jump for joy over. A funny moment has Godzilla shaking his head like a dog, and a weird moment has Godzilla jumping high in the air and landing on Megaguirus, which looks ridiculous.

2001 GODZILLA MOTHRA KING GHIDORAH: BATTLE ON FIRE *****

Here we go! My favorite Godzilla film! The director of the highly successful Gamera trilogy takes his try with Godzilla, and creates an amazing movie. This one however has a different feel than all of the previous ones. Godzilla appears in Japan after 50 years and begins killing everything in sight. He is clearly evil and the villian here rather than his normal force of nature self, and its hard to root for him as he is shown killing a lot of people. But then again, maybe not. Its not his fault people get in his way! Also changed is the Mothra, King Ghidorah, and Baragon origins, as they here are protectors of the earth awakened to protect Japan against Godzilla. Great special effects and a great new evil looking Godzilla suit. While not as important as the first G movie, this one in my opinion is the most fun and exciting one to watch. I like it more and more each time I see it. This is the highest grossing Godzilla movie of the Millenium Series, and its easy to see why.

2002 GODZILLA AGAINST MECHAGODZILLA **

After Godzilla returns in 1999 to Tokyo, the Japanese government uses DNA from the original Godzilla skeleton, which has recently been found, in order to create a robot to defend Japan. Though this movie has some fast paced action sequences in the final battle (really the only battle in the movie), we have seen this all before. Godzilla and Mechagodzilla battle to a tie, setting up a sequel.

2003 GODZILLA: TOKYO SOS **

A direct sequel to Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla. The first one in this new Godzilla series. Godzilla again battles MechaGodzilla, along with Mothra and her two larva. While the fairies warn humans about using Mechagodzilla. Godzilla fries Mothra again (which is always fun to watch) as her larva wrap their coccoons around him after G is injured. Mechagodzilla then dumps Godzilla into the ocean, as both of them sink to the bottom. (Hmmmm have they ever ended a Godzilla film like that before???) Toho has just run out of ideas, and has ruined the Godzilla films by having boring scripts and rushed production, which is what happened in the mid 70's. These newer films just aren't good enough to attract new fans, and (again) it was decided to shut down Godzilla. If not for his 50th anniversary, this would have been the last one.

2004 GODZILLA: FINAL WARS **1/2

Humans and mutants try to stop aliens called Xillians from taking over the world by releasing Godzilla from the South Pole. He battles about 10 different monsters that are being controlled by the Xillians as our human/mutant friends find a way to defeat them. Toho spent a lot of money on this, and its got a different feel to it. American actors are used to give it a more international appeal. It is far from perfect; Godzilla takes a long time to show up, the battles are very short, the Matrix style human fighting scenes are a drag, and the Zilla scene should have been longer. Overall, I was let down, especially this being the 50th anniversary film. This is the best Toho can do? Again, this film, despite heavy promotion, just didnt make money in Japan (in fact they lost a lot, about $8 million). It was announced Godzilla would not return until 2013. Maybe a different generation of Godzilla film makers can make a change. CGI Godzilla? I think its time.

2008 GODZILLA 3D TO THE MAX

IMAX Godzilla film thats been in developement hell since 2005. Godzilla battles a creature called Deathla, simliar to the plot of Godzilla vs Smog Monster. He is awakened in Brazil and the final battle will occur in Las Vegas. It will run 40 minutes and have an American cast. Whether it gets made or not remains to be seen.

GODZILLA MOVIES THAT WERE NEVER MADE

1963 FRANKENSTEIN vs GODZILLA A screenplay was written for this matchup, but Toho rejected it. However they used parts of it for their movie Frankenstein Conquers The World.

1972 GODZILLA vs REDMOON A creature appears from under the moons surface and heads to earth. Another creature awakens in the Japan area. Humans lure both monsters together in hopes of a battle, but instead they mate. They have a baby, but a ruthless man looking for profit accidently kills it. The 2 monsters lash out at earth as Godzilla appears and saves the day.

1977 THE REBIRTH OF GODZILLA Toho planned a color remake of the original, but it never happened.

1978 GODZILLA vs THE DEVIL Godzilla does battle with gigantic spider, fish, bird, and at the climax - Satan himself.

1979 GODZILLA vs GARGANTUAS Godzilla was to fight a creature similiar to the feuding siblings of War of the Gargantuas.

1980 THE RETURN OF GODZILLA Toho had planned to bring back the Big G in 1980 as a protest against toxic waste, but it was scrapped with no explanation given.

1983 GODZILLA:KING OF THE MONSTERS IN 3-D An American movie in which Godzilla looks more like a dinosaur and behaves more like a wild animal. There is a baby invloved and the story is in San Fransisco. Also Godzilla's origins are different than the Japanese version. Here he comes from an era of pre-dinosaurs when they had nuclear fission in their bodies. At the end, he is killed by a missle fired down his throat. It was to be directed by Steve Miner, who made Friday the 13th 2 and 3. He went on to direct Mel Gibson's Forever Young, also Halloween:H20 and Lake Placid. But at the time he was relatively unknown and no studio would approve the budget, though it did get close to being made. Then Toho made Godzilla 1984, and the plan was dumped.

1994 TRISTAR GODZILLA

This is what the Godzilla movie was like before those 2 idiots Devlin and Emmerich got their hands on it. Godzilla was to play earth's defender against an alien creature called the Gryphon. Godzilla looks like his old self and has his atomic breath. It ends as Godzilla kills the Gryphon as the military moves in to kill Godzilla. The main human characters are in a helicopter and intercept a missle that was fired at Godzilla. As the helicopter falls from the sky, Godzilla catches it and places it on the Statue of Liberty crown. The director of Speed, Jan DeBont was to direct, but again the budget was too high, and he left the project. Funny how when Devlin and Emmerich took over, their budget went just as high.
